Pre-K 4 SA’s CDA Program Opens to the San Antonio Public

For the past two years Pre-K 4 SA’s Professional Learning Department has provided Child Development Associate (CDA) classes for the employees within the organization.  We are very pleased to announce that for the upcoming school year Preschool CDA classes will be open for registration to individuals who work or live in the City of San Antonio.

The CDA is a nationally recognized credential administered by the Council for Professional Development.  Its purpose is to expand the knowledge base, experience, and quality of early childhood educators and is meant to be a stepping stone on the path of career advancement in early childhood education.

The Professional Learning Department is offering courses to assist adult learners in obtaining the necessary coursework to apply for a Preschool CDA.  Once the coursework and Professional Portfolio are complete,  candidates are eligible to pay the application fee, request a Council’s Professional Development Specialist to conduct an observation, and register to take the CDA exam.

Some of the program details include:

  • Candidates must pay for the CDA Professional Development Specialist observation and exam (The total fee is $425, if the application is completed online).

  • Fees for the classes are waived.

  • Textbooks are available for check-out and portfolio notebooks will be provided.

  • Assistance with the Professional Portfolio creation, selection of a Professional Development Specialist, and CDA test registration will be offered.

Candidates must:

  • Obtain current and valid Certificates of Completion in First Aid and child CPR courses on her/his own

  • Live or work in the City of San Antonio

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED

  • Have 480 hours of experience working with children ages 3-5 within three years of submitting a CDA application.

There are two series of classes available for Fall 2018.*  Both series of classes will meet at Pre-K 4 SA’s West Education Center.

  • The first series of classes meet on Saturdays from 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM.  (For details concerning the class meeting dates and to register for the Saturday series of classes click here.)

  • The second series meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM.  (For details concerning the class meeting dates or to register for the Tuesday and Thursday evening series of classes click here.)

Whether an individual selects the Saturday option OR Tuesday/Thursday option, attendance at all of the classes within the chosen series is required.

The Professional Learning Department is extremely excited about the opportunity to offer CDA classes to individuals in San Antonio who work with children ages 3-5 and want to expand their knowledge and advance their careers in the early childhood education field.

 * A minimum of 15 participants must register and attend in order for that series of classes to occur.   Additionally, there is a maximum limit of candidates per series.

1st-3rd grade educators worked together to learn engaging ways to develop number sense. Students will develop fact fluency while playing games that use their number sense strategies. By learning their facts in this way, students are not merely memorizing, but rather learning to work with numbers flexibly.  “Low achievers are often low achievers not because they know less but because they don’t use numbers flexibly – they have been set on the wrong path, often from an early age, of trying to memorize methods instead of interacting with numbers flexibly.” Jo Boaler,  Stanford University, 2009
